Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spartan women end 2014 with home contest with Elmhurst

The Aurora University women's basketball team hosted the Blue Jays of Elmhurst College on Tuesday evening in the final contest of the 2014 year. AU would fall to Elmhurst 87-52.

The Spartans and Blue Jays began the game trading shots over the first five minutes of the first half. AU junior Bethany Dorrington made a jumper from the free throw line to give the Spartans the lead 8-7 with 15:50 to play.  But the Spartans hit a cold streak after Elmhurst led 9-8 with exactly five minutes plated. With seven minutes left in the half the Spartans trailed 22-16.

The Blue Jays put together a 22-8 run to end the half and the teams entered halftime with a 46-24 score. Four Spartans scored in the first half with Shannon Koski leading with nine, Dorrington (eight), Rachel Rivera (five) and Neely Marks had two.

The second half was much like the first as the teams traded baskets in the opening minutes. AU junior Molly Rosenow hit a three to start the half but Elmhurst would answer with a 12-0 run to push the lead to 58-27.

AU battled hard the remainder of the half but eventually fell to the Blue Jays 87-52. Koski finished with 16 points and Dorrington had 14 points, six assists and four steals.

With the loss, AU finishes the 2014 portion of the schedule with a 3-9 overall record and are 3-4 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Next action for the Spartan women's basketball team comes on Saturday, January 3, 2015 when they host Lakeland College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Thornton Gymnasium.
