The Aurora University hockey team concluded the 2013-2014 season by defeating the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) 9-3 in the final pool play contest of the 2014 American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) National Tournament Thursday night.
AU jumped out to a quick lead and kept the scoring momentum going throughout the first period, tallying five goals before Ole Miss snapped the shutout attempt.
Spartan
Kevin Salinas got the AU offense rolling with a goal that was assisted by his brother
Ricky Salinas and
Ryan Davlantes. The flood gates opened for the Spartans as
Adam Marshall scored the next goal on assists from
Anthony Rohde and
Jimmie Perkins, Davlantes then lit the lamp with assists from
Jake Spinder and
Kevin Salinas.
The next two AU goals came shorthanded as the Spartans killed off a five-minute penalty.
Thomas Massman scored the fourth AU goal and was followed up by Perkins.
Before the first period ended, Ole Miss got one past
Gavin Carlson who would finish the night with 16 saves.
The Spartans did not get on the scoreboard in the second period but saw their lead get cut by one as Ole Miss scored. AU took a 5-2 lead into the second intermission.
Ole Miss scoried with 16:30 left in the third period to cut the AU lead to two at 5-3. With 13 minutes to play, AU successfully killed a five on three giving the Spartans some much needed energy in the final minutes of play.
That boost led to four AU goals in the final minutes with scoring coming from
Kevin Salinas (Davlantes assist), Steve Kruesch (
Brandon Zurick assist),
Bryce Stenstrom (
Zach Abrams and
Billy Dwyer assists) and Marshall got his second of the game to round out the offense.
AU finished 1-2 in pool play at the ACHA Nationals. The Spartans finish the 2013-2014 season with a
36-4-1 overall record.
