Spartans open 2014 season with 3-1 win in Chelsea Lloyd Memorial Classic

The Aurora University Spartan women's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a decisive 3-1 win over Methodist University in the Chelsea Lloyd Memorial Classic.

Junior All-American candidate Nicci Bermudes started the 2014 season off like she finished 2013, scoring goals. She tallied the games first two scores in the first half with the first goal coming off an assist from senior Lisa Bajkowski,

With AU leading 2-0 at halftime, the weather wanted to take part in the day's events. An hour long lightning delay forced the teams to the locker rooms for an extended halftime.

Coming out of halftime, AU got on the scoreboard quickly again. This time Bermudes did the assisting, helping freshman Alexis Bejarano tally her first collegiate goal.

The Spartans and sophomore goalkeeper Rachael Warnock held the shutout until just under six minutes to play when Methodist player Cassie Poindexter scored with an assist from Melissa Jubin.

AU held on to the 3-1 lead for the win.

Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on Sunday, August 31 when they host Kalamazoo College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
