The Aurora university mens soccer team went two overtimes with the Panthers of Greenville College on
Friday afternoon on Vago Field with a 1-1 tie the ultimate result.
The Panthers received the early advantage when Jacob Jones was able to find the back of the net, beating AU goalkeeper
Zach McFarland and the Spartan defense to give Greenville a 1-0 lead with 35 minutes left.
With three minutes to play in the opening half, AU's
Ian Connelly had an amazing shot but Greenville goalie Thomas Crown made a tremendous save to keep the Spartans down by one. Â
After a very physical first half, the Spartans trailed the Panthers 1-0 going into the halftime intermission.
Early in the second half the Spartans were able to capitalize on a free kick goal by
Steven Soderstrom which got last the outstretched arms of Panthers goalie to tie the game at 1 with 41:18 left in the contest.
The Spartans and Panthers continued the physical play while battling back and forth the rest of the period displaying great defense. The teams headed into overtime tied at one.
The overtime periods were much like the second half with the Spartans and Panthers battling for possession but not scratching the scoreboard. As the final horn sounded, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie.

With the tie, AU is now 3-1-2 overall. Next action for the Spartan men's soccer team comes on Saturday, September 13 when they host Principia College. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. on Vago Field.
