For the sixth time in 2014 the Aurora University men's soccer team shutout an opponent, this time beating Lakeland College 6-0 on Saturday in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
The Spartan defense and goalkeeper
Zach McFarland answered any Muskie offensive opportunity while the AU offense capitalized on their opportunities. The first scoring chance came in the 28th minute when
Nick Cataldi found the back of the net with assists coming from
Jason O'Brien and
Jacob Goehring.
Just two minutes later, Goehring scored the first of his two goals on the day with an assist coming from the goalkeeper, McFarland. The eight minutes later the Spartans forced the action again but this time it was the Muskies putting the ball in the back of their own net giving the Spartans an own goal and a 3-0 lead.
After halftime the Spartans continued to control play and find the back of the net. In the 55th minute Goehring scored his second goal with an assist coming from
Miguel Barajas.
In the 60th minute Lakeland helped the Spartans once again. A Muskie foul in the box set up an AU penalty kick which was taken by
Shane Samuels. Samuels found success and gave AU a 5-0 lead.
As the game hit the 86th minute, Cataldi finished the scoring for the day with an unassisted goal.
With the win, AU is now 6-2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan men's soccer team comes on
Wednesday, October 1 when they host Dominican University. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Vago Field in Aurora, Illinois.
