Defense was a priority for the Aurora University men's soccer team entering the 2014 and the Spartans continued to see results with their third consecutive shutout win, this time a 2-0 win at Cornell College.
The Spartans dominated the first half of play, out shooting Cornell 11 to 1 and seven to one in corner kicks but could not light the lamp as the teams went to halftime 0-0.
In the second half, the Spartans continued to control the action and in the 63rd minute finally cracked the scoreless tie. Freshman
Omar Valadez scored the eventual game winning goal with assists from
Jason O'Brien and
Jacob Goehring.
Just under six minutes late,
Nick Cataldi scored with an assist from
Tyler Siebert to give the Spartans a commanding 2-0 lead.
The AU defense and goalkeeper
Zach McFarland controlled the pace of play and extended the teams shutout streak to 270 minutes.
With the win, AU is now 3-0 overall. Next action for the Spartan men's soccer team comes on
Saturday, September 6 when they travel to Grinnell College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa.
