The Aurora University men's soccer team took to the road for the second straight day, this time taking on Grinnell College with the teams playing to a 1-1 double overtime tie.
The Spartans would have their shutout streak snapped in the contest but not before coming close to a fourth straight shutout.
AU got on the scoreboard first in the 35th minute as
Kyle Leyva scored his first collegiate goal with an assist from
Nick Cataldi. The Spartan defense only allowed two shots in the first half for the hosts and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Grinnell was able to get more shots on the AU defense but Spartan goalkeeper
Zach McFarland and the defense had five saves. In the 87th minute, at 87:46, the Spartans shutout streak came to an end as Grinnell tied the game 1-1. The streak would end up at 357:46.
After two 10 minute overtime periods did not produce a goal, the teams finished with a 1-1 tie.
The tie moves the Spartans record to 3-0-1 overall on the season. Next action for the Spartan men's soccer team comes on
Tuesday, September 9 when they host the University of Chicago. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
