Late third period goals drop Spartans at CUW

For the second time this season the Aurora University hockey team traveled to Mequon, Wisconsin to take on the Falcons of Concordia University Wisconsin. After falling 8-2 in the first contest in November, AU was tied late in the third period at CUW before falling 5-3 with a late goal and empty netter did in the Spartans.

Starting in net for the third straight contest, AU's Griffin Strain stood strong in net with 43 saves in 47 shots on the night. Strain's night started off on a slow note thogh as CUW scored the games first goal just 1:43 into the first period. 1-0 would be the score going into the first intermission.

In the second period, the home Falcons struck again against AU and Strain 4:46 into the period for a 2-0 lead.

AU got on the scoreboard at 8:19 of the second with the Spartans top line of Trevor Hoth, Michael Mikulin and Rihards Marenis combining efforts. Hoth scored the goal with assists from Mikulin and Marenis. Only 19 seconds later though the Falcons struck back to push the lead back to 3-1.

At 14:05 of the second, the Spartans pulled back to within one goal with Ben WInter scoring with an assist from Gregory Sauers.

The 3-2 score remained as the teams entered the second intermission.

AU went on their third power play of the game 4:00 into the third period and 41 seconds into the extra man chance the Spartans hit pay dirt. Andrew Bergquist tallied the power play goal with assists from Jimmie Perkins and Justin Gregory and knotted the game at 3-3.

The game remained a 3-3 score late into the third period. With 2:29 on the clock, CUW broke the tie for a 4-3 lead and then added an empty net goal with just over a minute to play for the 5-3 final score.

With the loss, AU is now 1-12-1 in the NCAA and 6-13-1 overall. Next action for the Spartan hockey team comes on Saturday, January 17 when they travel to Gustavus Adolphus University. AU takes on the JV team at 2:00 p.m. in St. Peter, Minnesota.
