The Aurora University baseball team took the short drive to Carol Stream and the home field of the Wheaton College Thunder for three games this weekend. AU went 1-2 with the win coming in the final game, 12-8 over Wheaton.
Game One
Buena Vista 12, Aurora 6
The Spartans grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with a two run single from
Nick Turner that scored
Adam Lipscomb and
Dillon Popovich. Buena Vista had a big inning to take the lead they would hold on to in the bottom of the fourth. The Spartans would rally late but could not overcome the large deficit. Turner finished the game going three for five with four runs batted in and one run scored.
Game Two
St. Mary's (Minn.) 7, Aurora 2
AU again saw themselves on the scoreboard first against St. Mary's with a
Cale Sparks double scoring
Danny Walczak in the bottom of the second. But as happened in game one of the tournament, the lead was short lived as St. Mary' scored seven unanswered from the fifth inning on for the 7-2 Spartan loss. Mike Chervin was two for four for AU in game two.
Game Three
Aurora 12, Wheaton 8
Once again the Spartans put their starting pitcher,
Kyle Manske, on the bump with a lead and this time, Manske made the lead stand against Wheaton. The AU bats came to life, knocking out 16 hits on the night and through four innings, AU and Manske had a 10-2 lead. Leading 12-3 going into the bottom of the eighth, the AU bullpen made the game interesting but held on for the final score of 12-8.
Manske earned his second AU win to improve to 2-0 on the season. Eight hitters collected at least one hit with Jeff Gersch going three for six with a double, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Walczak and Sparks each went two for five with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
Entering Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action, AU is 10-6 overall. Next action for the Spartan baseball team comes on
Saturday, March 28 when they travel to Marian University. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m. in Fond du lac, Wisconsin.
