Spartans open NACC baseball schedule with split at Marian

The 2015 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference baseball scheduled opened up on Saturday with AU traveling to Marian University for a doubleheader. The Spartans split the road contests, losing 5-2 in game one before a 15-0 victory that ended in seven innings due to the run mercy rule.

Game One
Marian 5, Aurora 2

Game one did not go the Spartans way as they fell behind 3-0 in the third innings as AU starting pitcher Colin Hart allowed three runs on four hits to Marian in the frame.

The Spartan bats came to life in the top of the sixth. With one out, Tanner Oymaian and Dillon Popovich had back to back singles and after the second out of the inning, Adam Lipscomb reached by a hit by pitch to load the bases. Mike Chervin then knocked in Oymaian and Popovich on an error by the third baseman and the Spartans found themselves trailing by just one heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Marian though held off the Spartans, adding a run each in the sixth and eighth for the eventual 5-2 AU loss. Hart is now 2-3 on the season and offensively, Oymaian and Popovich each went two for four on the day with Oymaian adding a double.

Game Two
Aurora 15, Marian 0 (7 innings)

The second game of the doubleheader saw the AU bats spring to life and post a huge 10 spot for starting pitcher Cody Love before Love took the mound. In the first, the Spartans pounded out eight hits with Oymaian leading the way with a double and triple with four runs batted in and scoring twice.

After a quick bottom of the inning, the Spartans added another run in the second with Chervin singling and scoring on a Cale Sparks single.

In the fourth inning, AU added two more runs with Oymaian being a vocal part of the scoring again. Chervin and Sparks singled and after a two-out Danny Walczak walk, Oymaian singled to score Chervin and Sparks. Through three and one half innings, AU led 13-0.

The fifth again saw a crooked number go up on the scoreboard for the Spartans. Harry Vickers led off with a single and he then stole second and scored on a Lipscomb double. One out later, Lipscomb scored on a single from Ryan Rybakowski and a 15-0 Spartan lead.

Love continued to coast and finished the complete game shutout, allowing just two hits, walking two and striking out two to improve his record to 3-2. All nine AU starters had a hit with Oymaian going three for five with a triple, double, six runs batted in and two runs scored.

With the split, AU is now 11-7 overall and 1-1 in the NACC. Next scheduled action for the Spartan baseball team comes on Sunday, March 29 when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering. Game one of the NACC doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m. at Soflisburg Park in Aurora, Illinois.
