The Aurora University Spartans hosted the Falcons of Concordia University Wisconsin on Wednesday April 15, 2015 on AU's Vago Field. The Spartans were victorious 14-8 in the conference match-up.
Â
Scoring started slow for the high powered Spartan offense but picked up in a hurry just over three minutes into the game. The first goal came from senior
Max Obriecht with 11:43 remaining in the first quarter with an assist to
Garret Rosiek. Senior
Jordan Williams followed just 47 second later for a 2-0 AU lead as Rosiek assisted on the goal also. Senior
Nolan Miller then added an unassisted goal at 6:09 for the Spartans who led 3-0. Concordia would do their best to respond, but with another goal unassisted from Miller the first quarter rested in Spartan favor 4-2 at the end of one quarter.
Â
The second quarter began in similar fashion as the first. Struggling to get the ball into the net the first goal came from Obriecht with 10:41 left in the half. Concordia managed to score two unanswered goals bringing the score within one (5-4) with 8:03 to play. AU freshman
JK Torres, however, popped the final shot of the half by the Concordia keeper with 5.5 seconds remaining on the clock and the Spartans led 6-4 going into the half.
Â
Taking the field in the second half the game was Spartan dominated, though the scoring took time to develop. The Spartans scored four unanswered goals, three straight by Obriecht and one by Miller. Miller assisted on the second Obriecht goal of the half. When the flurry of shots ended the score stood 10-4 in favor of the Spartans. With their chances slipping away Derek Brueske of Concordia scored with 00:36 remaining on the clock to bring the score within five at the end of three quarters.
Â
The final quarter brought the same Spartan dominance as they outscored the Falcons 4-3 but controlled the action. Spartans
Jason Koziol and
Bailey Smith scored first to give AU a 12-6 lead.
Danny Loyall assisted on the Koziol goal while
Dustin Rhodes assisted Smith on a fast break goal.
Concordia would get three goals between 9:30 and 4:01 with the middle goal coming with a man-up for CUW. But not to be out done, Rosiek and freshman
Joe Ebel put the Falcons to bed as they added goals in the final 2:45. The Rosiek goal came as he intercepted a pass from the Falcon keeper and deposited the ball into the open net.
When the final horn sounded, the final score was in favor of the Spartans 14-8. Obriecht and Miller recorded five and three goals respectively with Miller picking up a fourth point on an assist. Sophomore
Cameron Brooks recorded nine saves for the win and Rosiek picked up three points (two assists and a goal) with four ground balls to push the Spartans to victory.
With the win, AU is now 10-6 overall and 5-0 in the MLC. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse comes on Saturda
y, April 18 when they play a neutral site contest against Wittenberg University. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. (EST) at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.
