A Midwest Lacrosse Conference road contest and victory at Beloit College Wednesday night pulled the Aurora University men's lacrosse team back to .500 on the season and 3-0 overall. AU jumped out to 4-1 lead and never looked back with a 15-7 final score.
Beloit got the games scoring started but four consecutive AU goals over four minutes of the first quarter gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish. Senior
Danny Loyall got the scoring started with an assist from senior
Nolan Miller and 50 seconds later, two more seniors,
Max Obriecht and
Garret Rosiek connected with Obriecht scoring on the Rosiek assist. Rosiek then tallied a man-up goal at 4:09 with an assist from freshman
Trevor McNamara. 17 seconds later, McNamara assisted Obriecht on his second goal of the night for a 4-1 lead. The host Buccaneers would score in the final seconds for a 4-2 AU lead after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Loyall started the scoring at 12:13 with
JK Torres picking up the assist. Beloit put a small scare into the Spartans as they scored twice to cut the lead to 5-4 and looked to regain momentum. But back to back goals to end the first half from
Dustin Rhodes and McNamara pushed the Spartan lead to three (7-4) at halftime.
Max Matthai assisted on the McNamara goal.
The halftime talk from AU Head Coach
Kylor Berkman must have hit home for the Spartans who came out of the intermission with a bang. Just 12 seconds into the third quarter, Rosiek scored his second of the night with an assist from Loyall. AU then scored three more goals to build an 11-4 advantage. Scoring for the Spartans were Obriecht,
Will Bradshaw (Torres assist) and
Jason Koziol (Obriecht assist).
After a Beloit goal, Torres tallied an unassisted goal that gave AU a 12-5 lead going to the final quarter. In the fourth, Miller scored early in the session with a Rosiek assist and after two Beloit goals, McNamara scored a man-up tally with an assist going to Koziol and
Matt Smidlein scored just before the final horn sounded with
Alex Gebben assisting on the play.
Camerom Brooks earned the win, playing three quarters with seven saves and
Brian Richter played the fourth quarter with four saves.
With the win, AU is now 6-6 overall and 3-0 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse comes on Satur
day, April 4 when they host Carthage College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
