Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

AU beats Eagles for third straight MLC regular season title

The Aurora University men's lacrosse team hosted the visiting Eagles of Benedictine University on Thursday, April 23 on Vago Field in what turned out to become the regular season Midwest Lacrosse Conference Championship as both teams entered with 5-0 MLC records.. The Spartans were victorious in the match up 15-9, winning the third straight MLC title.

The Spartans took the field for their annual rivalry game with the visitors from Benedictine and were determined not to disappoint the home crowd. The Eagles would score the first goal as the Spartans struggled to gain their footing on home turf. However, with a laser high to low shot from senior Max Obriecht, the Spartans tied the game 1-1 with 9:27 remaining in the quarter.

Following the Obriecht goal, the first quarter turned in the Spartans favor as they embarked on what would become a 9-1 run until late in the second quarter. The Spartans took a 6-2 lead by the end of the first. Obriecht and fellow senior Danny Loyall each had two goals in the opening quarter with senior Jordan Williams (man-up) and freshman JK Torres also tallying goals. Obriecht, Loyall and senior Garret Rosiek all had assists.

The Eagles looking to stop the flood of goals changed goal keepers to start the second quarter, but that did not stop the Spartan Flurry. Obriecht added his third and fourth goals of the first-half, while sophomore Jason Koziol added his first goal of the game, pushing the AU lead to 9-2.  Benedictine did get a late goal with 1:09 left in the half for the 9-3 halftime score.

Coming out of the halftime intermission, the Spartans took to the field in the second half looking to repeat their first half dominance. AU senior Nolan Miller and junior Alex Gebben each added goals to the growing AU lead and with 10:39 remaining in the third quarter the Spartans led 11-3.

After a Benedictine goal, AU bumped the lead to nine with a pair of goals from Koziol and Bailey Smith. The highlight among several jaw-dropping goals in the game came with exactly three minutes to play in the third quarter. On the man-up, AU's Rosiek found a loose ball in front of the Eagle net and as he jumped through the air, he beat the BU goalkeeper for his first score of the game.

The Eagles attempted to battle the Spartans back and scored four of the last five goals in the second half. However, six goals was as close as Benedictine would get as the final score rest 15-9.

Sharing the scoring ten different Spartans added to the win and Cameron Brooks stood tall in net recording nine saves for the Spartans.

With the conference championship clinching win, AU is now 11-7 overall and 6-0 in the MLC. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse comes on Wednesday, April 29 when they host the opening round of the 2015 Midwest Lacrosse Conference Tournament against Beloit College. Game time is still to be determined on Vago Field in Aurora, Illinois.
