Three straight MLC Tournament crowns in hand for AU

The Aurora University Spartans hosted the Falcons of Concordia University Wisconsin for the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday May 2. The Spartans were victorious over the Falcons 14-11 and the win marked the third consecutive MLC Tournament Championship win for the Spartans.

The Spartans took to the field eager to start their championship run and senior Max Obriecht started the scoring 13 seconds into the game. Obriecht quickly followed his first goal with a high to high laser shot over the goalkeeper's shoulder to put the Spartans up by two just 1:18 into the game.

AU continued their dominance as senior Garret Rosiek and freshman JK Torres each added goals for the Spartans who led 4-0 with 9:18 left to play. The scoring came to a halt until 4:00 left in the quarter when the Falcons began a 3-0 run to end the quarter. At the end of one quarter, AU led by a narrow margin of 4-3.

The Spartans and the Falcons then traded goals throughout the second quarter leaving the high pressure game tied 6-6 with 5:58 left in the half. Spartan senior Jordan Williams added his first goal of the game and Torres added his second goal for the first two Spartan goals of the second.

As the first-half crept to a close, AU sophomore Jason Koziol found the back of the net for the Spartans with 3:46 left in the half with an assist from Obriecht. The Spartans finished the half leading 7-6.

The Spartans looking for an explosive second half start, picked up a goal 12:53 into the quarter. Obriecht scored the quick goal off a Rosiek assist to put the Spartans up by two at 8-6. The tally was his third of the game and 47th goal of the year.

AU then allowed two goals exactly one minute a part to the Falcons leaving the game tied 8-8, with 10:25 left in the third quarter.

With 3:49 left in the third quarter, Danny Loyall scored to break the tie on a fast break with an assist coming from Koziol. This goal opened up a flurry from the Spartans as both Williams and senior Nolam Miller scored one goal before the end of the thir quarter. Heading to the fourth quarter, AU led 11-8.

The fourth quarter saw both teams score three goals each with Concordia unable to climb any closer than two goals on two occassions. Midway through the fourth, AU stillled 11-8 before a flurry of scoring broke out over 26 seconds. Concordia scored a pair of goals around an AU score from Koziol as Bailey Smith dished off an assist. Smith and Koziol then scored the games next two goals at 6:31 and 5:38 to run the AU lead to four at 14-10. When Koziol found the net the second time in the quarter, he talied his hat-trick. The Spartans fended off the Falcons in the final minutes, allowing one goal before rolling on to win the MLC Tournament Championship 14-11.

With the win, AU is now 13-7 overall. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse team comes in the 2015 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championships. AU will learn the location and time of the opening round game on Sunday, May 3 at 8:00 p.m. when the NCAA announces the Division III men's lacrosse field.
