The Aurora University Spartan hockey team hosted Finlandia University in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association opener and defeated the Lions 4-2 behind a big second period scoring punch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first 3/4 of the first period was a penalty laden contest.
With 3:02 to play in the opening period, AU got the games first tally when
Nikita Smirnov and
Andrew Rupert assisted on a
Bayley Marshall goal.
But less than a minute later, AU found themselves on penalty kill again and Finlandia made them pay, tying the game at one (1-1).
The first period intermission approached with a 1-1 score.
The Spartans opened the second period with a bang, scoring three times, including a power play goal in the first 7:32 with tallies coming from Tim Santapoalo,
Brendan Logan and
Ian Sweeney.
With AU leading 4-1,Finlandia scored 23 seconds after the last AU goal and pulled the score to 4-2.
The 4-2 score would hold throughout the remainder of the second and entire third periods with AU winning the first contest of the season.
