Led by 15 saves from Jared Rutledge and a penalty kill unit that successfully killed three penalties including a 5-3 the Spartans led 1-0 at the first intermission.
Shortly after the second part of the 5-3 ended in the second period, AU's Tim Santopoalo pushed the AU lead to 2-0. 1:40 into the second, he scored with assists from Greene and Rihards Marenis.
Lake Forest took advantage of another AU penalty 6:17 into the second to tally a power play goal and cut the AU lead to one, 2-1.
