Baseball celebrates senior day and clinches NACC seed

The Aurora University Spartan baseball team hosted Wisconsin Lutheran College with Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament ramifications as well as celebrated senior day. The Spartans swept the doubleheader, winning 9-3 and 9-1.

BEYOND THE BOX
- With the sweep, AU clinched the no. 3 seed in the 2017 NACC Baseball Tournament.
- All 10 AU seniors played with three pitchers throwing, six position players starting one of the two games and pitcher Aron Okamoto getting his first collegiate at bat in game two.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME ONE
- Both teams left numerous runners on over the first four innings but none crossed the plate.
- In the fifth, WLC took advantage of an AU error and scored three runs on a bases clearing double.
- The Spartans answered back right away though, scoring four times in the bottom of the inning. Jeff Woods led off with a long home run. Following a successful double steal with two outs, Mike Cherven tripled to tie the game and then scored with the go ahead run.
- AU added two more runs in the sixth thanks to walks and errors by WLC.
- AU manufactured a run (Jeff Mayes scored) in the seventh but for the second inning in a row left the bases loaded.
- In the eighth, Woods hit a two run double to score Mayes and Nick Turner and AU led 9-3.
- Chris Roycroft sealed the win as he was credited with a save when he came on in the seventh with the bases loaded. He struck out his first of four in 2-1/3 innings to get out of the jam.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME TWO
- WLC took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on AU starter Jeff Woods.
- AU left the bases loaded in the third without scoring a run.
- In the fourth, AU took the lead, scoring two runs on four singles.
- Three straight doubles in the fifth from Adam Lipscomb, Ty Jaquez and Jeff LaPage scored two runs and AU now led 4-1.
- A double from Jeff Mayes in the sixth allowed him to later score and push the lead to 5-1.
- Four Spartan singles and three walks allowed AU to score four times in the seventh and now led 9-1.
- AU won 9-1.

Next scheduled action for the Spartan baseball team comes on Thursday, May 11 when they open the 2017 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. AU as the No. 3 seed will play No. 6 seed Milwaukee School of Engineering at 10:00 a.m. in Mequon, Wisconsin on the campus of Concordia University Wisconsin.
