Spartans sweep day one of Wheaton Invitational

The Aurora University baseball team swept a doubleheader at Wheaton College in the Wheaton Invitational, defeating Saint Mary's University (Minn.) 4-0 and Alma College 10-0 in 8 innings. Timely hits and the pitching staff hurled 17 shutout innings for the wins.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME ONE vs. SAINT MARY'S (MINN.)
- Pitching dominated the game for both sides early in the contest as AU starter Jacob Stockman worked out of a pair of jams in the second and fourth to keep the game scoreless.
- In the fifth, AU got the inning started with back to back walks. Both Cole Davis and Austin Wiskow would come around to score and AJ Gill who had earlier singled later scored for a 3-0 AU lead.
- Stockman would turn the game over to Chris Roycroft in the seventh and he made the shutout hold up despite loading the bases in the eighth inning.
- AU added an insurance run in the ninth with a one out single from Cale Sparks and he scored on a Jeff Mayes double.
- Jacob Stockman went six innings for the win, allowing seven hits, no runs and struck out five.
- Chris Roycroft threw the final three innings for the save, he allowed one hit, no runs, did walk five and struckout five.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME TWO vs. ALMA COLLEGE
- AU was the home team in gme two against Alma. Following Kyle Blunt striking out the side in the first, the AU bats gave him some runs early. Jeff Mayes reached on a strikeout (passed ball) and later scored as did Davis Purviance who singled to reach.
- Leading 2-0, Blunt did not allow a hit or base runner until the fourth but the score remained 2-0 Spartans.
- AU added two more in the bottom of the fourth. Three singles from Austin Wiskow, AJ Gill and Colin Rivard along with a suicide squeeze and a wild pitch plated the runs.
- The Spartans built the lead to 8-0 in the sixth with four more runs crossing the plate. A pair of doubles from Jett Wedekind and Davis Purviance were the big knocks in the inning.
- In the eighth, AU ended the game early with the mercy rule (10 run lead after 7 innings). Two hits (Rivard and Kyle MacFarlane) and two Alma errors scored two AU runs and the game finished 10-0.
- Kyle Blunt threw seven shutout innings, allowing five hits, walking one and struck out 11.
- Jett Wedekind was three for four with two doubles, one run scored and one run batted in.
- Austin Wiskow was two for three with two runs scored.
- Colin Rivard was two for three with two runs scored..
- Davis Purviance was two for four with a double, one run scored and one run batted in.
