The Aurora University baseball team bounced back on Sunday afternoon with a NACC doubleheader sweep of Edgewood College, winning 5-3 in 10 innings and 6-3. Strong pitching and timely hitting was the key to success for the Spartans.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME ONEÂ
- A two-out ground rule double from
Davis Purviance was followed by a single from
Bryce DeSpain and AU led 1-0 in the fourth.
- Edgewood took the lead with a pair of runs in the seventh on AU starter
Chris Roycroft.
- The Spartans answered right away to tie the game with a run in the top of the eighth.
Cale Sparks led off with a double,
Colin Rivard reached on a bunt base hit and
Austin Wiskow drove in Sparks. AU had a chance for more runs but left the bases loaded.
- AU went to Nick Mathey in relief of Roycroft in the ninth.
- The game was tied 2-2 and headed to extra innings.
- In the 10th, AU had the top of the order coming up.
Jett Wedekind walked and
Jeff Mayes was hit by a pitch. After moving up on a wild pitch,
Davis Purviance drove them both in with a single. Purviance scored later in the inning on an Edgewood error and the Spartans led 5-2.
- Edgewood scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning but Mathey locked down the win as AU was victorious 5-3.
SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME TWO
- The Spartans saw themselves trail early in game two as Edgewood scored three runs in the first on three hits and an error.
- As they did in game one, AU answered immediately with two out tango being the trick in the second inning. With two on (
Cole Davis and
Cale Sparks) with two out, Wedekind, Mayes and Purviance all singled and AU tied the game 3-3.
- After
AJ Gill singled to lead off the third and later scored in the inning, AU gave starter
Will King all the runs he would need.
- King held Edgewood to no runs and four hits over the final seven innings as he secured his fifth win of the year.
- Insurance runs crossed for the Spartans in the sixth. A one out single from
Colin Rivard was followed by doubles from
Austin Wiskow and
Jeff Mayes and AU led 6-3.
- King hurled the complete game and the Spartans earned the sweep of the day, winning 6-3.
