Defense steps up and Spartans spoil CUW Homecoming

The Aurora University Spartan football team took to the road and spoiled Homecoming for the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. AU's offense fought turnovers while the defense dominated, shutting down the Falcons for all but one drive in the game. AU defeated CUW 24-7 to remain unbeaten in the NACC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans took the opening kickoff and marched down the field in 15 plays but three sacks on four plays ended the AU scoring drive inside the red zone.
- AU's defense got the ball right back for the offense which went right back to work. 10 plays and 80 yards led by 49 yards rushing from Tyran Bailey ended with Gavin Zimbelman connecting with Jacolby Maxwell for 15 yards and a touchdown.
- On the first three possessions of the second quarter for AU and leading 7-0, interceptions ended AU drives, all inside CUW territory.
- After the third interception, CUW was able to take advantage, driving 95 yards and tied the contest 7-7 as the teams headed to halftime.
- The Spartans defense forced a Falcon punt on the opening drive of the second-half. The punt was downed at the one-yard line.
- The offense responded though, methodically driving the field on 16 plays that lasted 7:08 on the game clock.
- Colton Jewell and Tyran Bailey led the drive with the final play coming as Zimbelman found Jewell on a jump pass from five yards out and AU led 14-7.
- The AU defense continued to hold firm, stopping the Falcons on a fourth down attempt just before the end of the third quarter.
- After both teams punted to start the fourth quarter, AU got on the scoreboard with their second drive.
- AU took over at the CUW 30 after a very short Falcon punt. Sean Kerr converted a 29 yard field goal and AU led 17-7 midway through the fourth.
- AU's defense forced another CUW punt and the AU offense took over at their own 22 with 7:54 left in the game.
- The Spartans used the ground game of Tyran Bailey and Gavin Zimbelman to go 78 yards with Bailey dashing 32 yards on the final play for a score and AU led 24-7.
- AU again stopped any CUW offensive effort and sealed a 24-7 victory.
 
FOR THE SPARTANS                                                     
- The AU defense held CUW to 283 total yards, including just 29 yards on the ground while sacking the Falcons three times.
- Tyran Bailey had 29 carries for 168 yards and a touchdown.
- Gavin Zimbelman was 18-of-30 passing for 208 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
- Colton Jewell had seven catches for 117 yards and one touchdown.
- Jacolby Maxwell caught three passes for 34 yards and one touchdown.
- Sean Kerr had a 29-yard field goal and was three-of-three in extra points.
