Roycroft and Turnquist spin Spartans to wins

The Aurora University baseball team got a solid all around effort highlighted by very strong pitching efforts from Chris Roycroft and Carter Turnquist in a doubleheader against Northland College and Loras College. The Spartans won 13-0 (7 innings) over Northland and 4-3 over Loras.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME ONE
- The Spartans were dominant in the victory over Northland.
- Starting pitcher Carter Turnquist tossed six one hit innings, not allowing a baserunner and hit until the fifth. He struck out five.
- Freshman Seth Gutknecht threw a perfect seventh inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
- Offensively, AU took advantage of five walks with eight hits to score 13 runs.
- AU scored six runs in the second and fifth innings for the damage.

SPARTAN HIGHLIGHTS - GAME TWO
- Both AU and Loras got a double in the first but neither could take advantage.
- The Spartans had base runners in each of the first four innings but were unable to push across a run.
- AU starter Chris Roycroft was very efficient early, getting the Duhawks to ground out early in the count.
- In the top of the fifth, Loras got four hits, three soft singles and a double to score three runs and lead the Spartans 3-0.
- In the bottom of the inning, AU threatened but were unable to capitalize and trailed 3-0.
- After their first 1-2-3 inning of the game in the sixth, the bats awoke in the seventh.
- A lead-off walk for Michael Fidler was followed by singles from Jeff Mayes and Colin Rivard which scored Fidler.
- With one-out, Austin Wiskow drove single to right center but a base running blunder produced the second out.
- Davis Purviance loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch, Jett Wedekind reached on an error which scored Rivard and then AJ Gill was hit by a pitch to score Wiskow and tie the game.
- Heading to the eighth, the game was tied 3-3.
- As the offense tied the game, Roycroft was locked in over the final four innings on the mound. He got all six of his strikeouts in the final four frames and allowed just two Loras base runners in the final 14 batters he faced.
- In the eighth, with one out, Mayes doubled to right center and moved to third on a hard single from Rivard. Senior Jacob Bachio (pinch hit in the seventh) drove a single to left and AU led for the first time in the game, 4-3.
- In the ninth, Roycroft allowed a one-out single before getting a strikeout and a pop out to right for the Spartan win.

Next action for the Spartan baseball team comes on Wednesday, March 20 when they travel to Wheaton College. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Carol Stream, Illinois.
