Football game outlook - North Central College

The Aurora University football team takes to the road for week two of the 2021 season when they travel to North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on Saturday, September 11. Game time has been set for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.

This will be the first regular season meeting between the two football programs since 1936 when AU fell to NCC 21-0.

About the Aurora University Spartans –
- AU is 0-1 on the 2021 season, following a 39-33 loss at No. 6 St. John's University
- The Spartans drove the field in their final drive of the game but came up just short on a fourth and one play from the one yard line.
- The Spartan offense had 423 yards against St. John's with 341.
- Defensively, AU forced two turnovers, both interceptions.

Spartan Key Performers - 
- Quarterback Gavin Zimbelman passed for 341 yards on 23-of-44 passing, five touchdowns and no interceptions.
- Receiver Trey Madsen caught seven passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
- Receiver Brock Harner had two catches, both touchdowns for 29 yards.
- Colin Dominski had six tackles with 1.5 being tackles for loss.
- Sean Reyna had a two interceptions with six tackles in week one.

National Rankings: The Spartans are ranked No. 21 and North Central is ranked No. 4 in the most recent D3football.com Top 25 Poll. The Cardinals and Spartans were ranked No. 3 and No. 23, respectively, in the Preseason Poll released in August.

About the North Central College Cardinals –
North Central takes the field for the first time since winning the NCAA Division III national championship in 2019. The Cardinals return 13 starters from the 2019 season. 

Cardinals to Watch - 

  • Andrew Kamienski established an all-time Division III record with 31 touchdown receptions in 2019, leading the nation in receptions (133) and receiving yards (2,016). 
  • Ethan Greenfield, the 2019 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl Most Outstanding Player award winner, led Division III in rushing yards (2,169), rushing touchdowns (29), all-purpose yards (2,580), total touchdowns (32) and total points (192).
  • Sharmore Clarke was voted the CCIW's Offensive Lineman of the Year for the second straight season.
  • Jake Beesley led the Cardinals in interceptions (4) and passes defended (15) in 2019 while leading the CCIW in fumbles forced (3).

Up Next for the Spartans - 
- The Spartans return home for the 2021 home opener on Saturday, September 18. AU will host Concordia University Chicago at Spartan Athletic Park with a kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Montgomery, Illinois.
