Spartans Start NCHA Play With 5-3 Victory

The Aurora University women's hockey team came back home for their first conference matchup of the 2023-2024 season as they continued their series with Concordia University Wisconsin. The Spartans scored three unanswered goals in the second period, two of them from Olivia Buzzelli, to beat the Falcons for a 5-3 victory at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

How it happened 
- The first period saw neither the Spartans or Falcons score a goal.
- With 5:26 left in the first period the Spartans had a 5 on 3 power play but were unable to capitalize on the chance.
- 6:31 into the second period, CUW scored to make it 1-0.
- AU answered back in just 13 seconds, as Peyton Elliott found the back of the CUW net to put the Spartans on the board. Elliott was set up Olivia Buzzelli and Stephanie Schmunk.
- Less than two minutes later, Madison Gasper picked up a loose puck in the CUW defensive zone and was all alone with the Falcons goalie. She went top shelf to put AU up 2-1.
- The Spartan scoring in the second period did not stop there. 12:10 into the frame, Elliott and Haley Knauf assisted Buzzelli for her first goal of the game, putting the Spartans up 3-1.
- AU took their two goal lead in to the second intermission. 
- CUW scored at 6:17 and 10:48 of the third period to tie the game at three. The second CUW goal came on the power play.
- Just like the second period, the Spartans answered back quickly. Molly Matson found Buzzelli for her second goal of the game putting AU ahead 4-3 with 5:09 left in the game.
- With 2:32 to go into the game, AU padded their lead while shorthanded. Erin Campbell fired one into the back of the Falcons of the assist from Darci Matson and Buzzelli.
- That final goal gave AU the 5-3 win.
