Spartans win key non-conference match-up at Hope

The Aurora University women's lacrosse team won a key non-conference road contest on Tuesday afternoon at Hope College, defeating the Dutch 10-9, a game that went down to the final seconds. In the win, Spartan Margaret Flanagan reached 100 career points.

How it happened
- After almost 10 minutes of scoreless back and forth action, the Spartans struck first.
- Bailey Simpson scored twice, two minutes a part to give AU a 2-0 lead.
- The Spartans led 2-1 after one quarter played.
- 15 seconds after Hope tied the game, Spartan Caley Russell put AU ahead on an assist from Hannah Martindale.
- Just 30 seconds later, Simpson collected her hat trick and AU led 4-2.
- The Spartans led 4-3 going to halftime.
- Midway through the third, Monique Gobson scored twice 30 seconds a part and AU held the largest lead of the game 6-3.
- Following two Hope goals, Gibson scored to collect her hat trick and give AU a 7-5 lead just before the end of the third.
- Hope scored three goals in the first 1:11 of the fourth and led the Spartans for the first time in the game 8-7.
- Gibson answered 30 seconds later to tie the game and started a 3-0 AU run.
- With 8:36 left in the game, Margaret Flanagan scored to put AU ahead 9-8. The goal was her 100th career point.
- 1:03 later at 7:33, Hannah Martindale scored the eventual game winning goal giving the Spartans the 10-8 advantage.
- Hope scored with 5:48 left to bring the game to a one score contest.
- The AU defense clamped down in the final minutes, allowing just two shots wide, both in the final nine seconds of the game to seal the victory.
- AU won 10-9.
