Spartans split day two of Coleman Classic

The Aurora University women's volleyball team opened the returned to Lancaster Court of day two of the 2023 Jim Coleman Memorial Classic. The Spartans started the day with a 3-0 victory (25-19,25-16,25-20) over Macalester College and wrapped up the Classic with an exciting five set match with the University of Chicago. AU fell 3-2.

MATCH TWO SCORE: University of Chicago 3, Aurora University 2 (15-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-20, 13-15)
LOCATION: Lancaster Court in Thornton Gymnasium - Aurora, Illinois

How it happened
MATCH ONE:
- The Spartans fell behind in the opening set and were down by as many as six points before mounting a comeback.
- AU finished the set on a 19-8 run and were led by seven Lulu Torres kills in the 25-20 win.
- The second set was a mirror opposite of the first with AU leading early and Cornell rallying to win 25-21.
- The Spartans then found themselves down 2-1 after dropping the third set 25-17.
- AU showed energy in the third set as they rallied late.
- The momentum carried over into the fourth set which saw a closely played back and forth thriller.
- Facing match point, AU's Celeste Cozzoni knocked down back to back kills and when an attack error for Cornell finished the set, AU tied the match 2-2 with a 26-24 set win.
- The winner take all fifth set also added more excitement for the Thornton Gymnasium crowd.
- AU built and maintained a lead at 9-7 which was then 10-8 following the third kill of the frame from Torres.
- Cornell ran off four straight points though and led AU 12-10.
- The Spartans tried to rally again but came up just shy as they fell 15-12 and lost the match 3-2. 

MATCH TWO
- The Spartans fell behind early in the first set and fell 25-15.
- An early deficit in the second ser again was to much to overcome for AU as they fell 25-17 and were down 2-0 in the match.
- AU showed grit and battled in the third set which was closely played throughout.
- Hannah Joseph had 14 assists in the third set as AU won 25-22 while Lulu Torres added six kills and Kate Poellmann had five.
- The fourth set saw AU lead for most of the frame and winning 25-20 to force the winner take all fifth set.
- Torres (six) and Poellmann (five) led the office that was directed by Joseph (15 assists).
- The fifth and final set added to the excitement of the final set of the day for the 2023 Jim Coleman Classic.
- The score remained within one point until the final score but AU fell 15-13 and lost 3-2
