Spartans split with Green Knights

The Aurora University baseball team split a doubleheader at St. Norbert College on Saturday, winning game one 17-0 before falling in game two 8-6.

How it happened
Game One:
- The Spartans got a two-run double from Nik Panico and a two-run home run from Dominick Curcio in the first inning to grab a quick 4-0 lead.
- After starter Justin Zimmerman struck out the side in the bottom of the inning, the bats added on.
- Three singles and a pair of dropped fly balls by the SNC right fielder led to four more AU runs and an 8-0 lead.
- In the fourth the Spartans took advantage of four walks, a hit by pitch and added three singles to score five more runs and take a 13-0 lead.
- A bases clearing double from Logan Riley in the sixth added three more AU runs and a 16-0 lead.
- As AU brought on pinch hitters and defensive replacements, Jon Wray singled in the seventh and scored on a Tyler Koscinski single for the 17th and final run of the game.
Game Two:
- Two hit by pitches to start the game for AU starter Jack Fisher eventually led to a four run inning for the hosts and AU trailed early 4-0.
- AU cut the deficit in half in the fourth following a lead off home run from Nico Bermeo. Later in the inning, Curcio singled to score Logan Riley.
- SNC answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and AU trailed 5-2 after four.
- A two-run homer in the fifth put SNC ahead 7-2.
- Nik Panico kept the Spartans in the game with a two-run home run of his own in the sixth to bring the Spartans to down 7-4.
- SNC manufactured a run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-4.
- In the eighth the Spartans loaded the bases with two outs and when Bermeo was hit by a pitch, the Spartans were down 8-5 with the bases still jammed.
- A hard ground out would end the frame with AU down three at 8-5.
- Nick Czarnecki doubled to lead off the ninth and scored on a wild pitch to bring AU down two at 8-6 with one on and one out,
- The Spartans rally would come up short as they would see their nine game win streak end with the 8-6 loss.
