Spartans take two from Sabres

The Aurora University softball team picked up another sweep in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, this time against the Sabres of Marian University at Bedrosian Stadium. AU took game one by a score of 9-1 in five innings, before winning in a closer affair in game two by a score of 7-6.

How it happened
GAME ONE:
- The Sabres got on the board in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead.
- AU answered right back in the bottom half of the inning when Shelby Linn hit a two-run double that scored Kionna King and Tyler Chambers.
- The Spartans took a 4-1 lead later in the first when Jordan Seyfried singled home two more runs.
- AU scored another run in the bottom of the second when Faith Biggs tripled off the center field wall.
- Alyson Haegele singled back up the middle in the third that allowed Casey Brennann and Linn to score and make it 7-1 in favor of AU.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Linn continued her strong offensive day with a run scoring single.
- Marian saw the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, but AU starter Rylee Campbell was able to escape the jam and keep the score at 8-1.
- The Spartans took the 9-1 victory in the fifth with a Chambers RBI double that brought home Alex Thiel.
- Campbell finished with five innings pitched of one run ball.
GAME TWO:
- Marian scored the game's first run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead.
- The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first when Biggs launched a two-run homer over the center field wall.
- The Sabres tied the game at two in the top of the second.
- AU regained a two-run lead in the third when Aubrey Ortiz put a ball in the left center gap and use her speed for an inside-the-park home run.
- That lead became 5-2 in the fourth when Madison Lung came around to score on an error from the Sabres.
- Ortiz layed down a perfect bunt a batter later that allowed Thiel to score and make it 6-2 in favor of AU.
- The Sabres scored four runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at six.
- The Spartans answered right back when Thiel hit a sac-fly that allowed Brennan to trot home.
- Campbell finished off the Sabres in the seventh inning to secure the 7-6 AU victory.
