This Week In AU Athletics: September 16 - September 22

Last week saw a number of Spartan teams find success as the men's golf squad picked up a first-place finish in the Carthage College Fireball Claasic to win their second consecutive tournament. The men's and women's soccer team picked up their first wins of the 2024 season, while the AU women's cross country team took a first-place finish at the 20th annual Spartan Classic meet. In addition, the women's volleyball team was a perfect 3-0 along the course of Friday and Saturday in the Marilyn Scribner Classic.

MEN'S GOLF 
The AU men's golf team will continue their season on Monday and Tuesday when compete in the Folds of Honor Challenge in Allendale, Michigan that started on Sunday. The Spartans will be playing at The Meadows Golf Club hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Last Week By The Numbers:
- Five Spartan individuals finished in the top 10 of the Carthage College Fireball Classic.
- AU shot a two-round 580 (295/285) to win by 18 strokes.
- Caleb Negley won individual medalist honors with with a two-round score of four-under 140 (70/70).

WOMEN'S GOLF
The AU women's golf team will travel to West Chicago on Tuesday to compete with Benedicitne University at St. Andrews Golf Club, as the Spartans gear up for the NCAA Midwest Regional that takes place on Friday and Saturday. That will be played Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville, Wisconsin, where the Spartans finished sixth out of 33 teams last year.

Last Week By The Numbers:
- AU finished fifth after a strong 298 in the second round of the competitive Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Classic.
- Michelle Beggs finished tied for eighth with a two-round score of 148 (77/71).
- Beggs was named to the All-Tournament Team for her top-10 finish.

MEN'S SOCCER (1-3-2, 0-0)
The AU men's soccer team will hit the Spartan Athletic Park pitch to host Dominican University for the beginning of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Spartans are coming off a second place finish in the regular season conference standings last year after going 10-0-2 in the NACC. On Saturday, AU will travel to Mequon, Wisconsin for a 1:00 p.m match with Concordia University Wisconsin.

Last Week By The Numbers:
- AU eased past Greenville University on the road last Friday 5-0 led by an Enrique Gonzalez hat trick.
- The Spartans also picked up their first shutout of the season in that match up.
- AU then fell to the University of Chicago on Sunday 4-2.
- Branden Dolezal notched two goals in the loss.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (1-5-0, 0-0)
The AU women's soccer team will play continue their road trip with a couple of matches this week, starting at 3:00 p.m on Wednesday at Dominican University. This is the beginning of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play for the Spartans, as they finished sixth in last year's regular season standings. AU will then travel to Mequon, Wisconsin for a match up with Concordia University Wisconsin. That contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m after the men's contest.

Last Week By The Numbers:
- AU was victorious at home over Elmhurst University 4-0 last Wednesday.
- Madison Hougan scored two goals, while Lauren Bliefernicht and Emma Delgado each had two assists.
- The Spartans fell on the road to Webster University 2-0 last Saturday.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (5-4, 0-0)
The AU women's volleyball team is looking at a full slate of matches that includes a couple of top 25 teams later in the week. First, the Spartans will play their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match again at Marian University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. AU is coming off a second place finish in last year's regular season conference standings after a 12-1 showing. On Friday, the Spartans will take on #20 North Park University and #18 Calvin University at North Park. Those matches are scheduled for 2:00 p.m and 4:30 p.m. The Aurora University Tri-Match also takes place this Saturday, with the University of Dubuque and Illinois Wesleyan University coming in to Thorton Gymnasium. AU takes on Dubuque at noon and Wesleyan at 5:00 p.m.

Last Week By The Numbers:
- AU did not lose a single set in the Marilyn Scribner Invitational.
- The Spartans beat Lawrence University (25-20, 25-21, 25-14).
- AU took down Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (25-8, 25-23, 25-22).
- The Spartans knocked off Beloit College (25-17, 25-4, 25-12).

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The AU men's cross country team will travel to Warrenville on Saturday to compete with Wheaton College at St. James Farm Forest Preserve. That race is scheduled to start at 9:45 p.m as the Spartans took 15th as a team in that race last year.

Last Week By The Numbers:
- AU finished in second place out of 12 teams at the Spartan Classic meet with 80 points.
- Cris Valencia led the way for the Spartans, finishing with a time of 27:12.8 in 17th place.
- This was a personal best time for Valencia by three seconds.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The AU women's cross country team will travel up to St. James Forest Preserve as well on Saturday to compete with Wheaton College. This race is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m as the Spartans placed 11th as a team in the race a year ago.

Last Week By The Numbers:
- AU placed first at the Spartan Classic meet with 29 points.
- N'Dya Fields completed the 6k course faster than anyone else, winning in a time of 24:03.2.
- She joins teammate Deedee Colon Maldonado as the only Spartans to win the individual title since 2018.

FOOTBALL (1-1, 0-0)
The AU football team will begin Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play like a number of of ther Spartan teams this week when they take on St. Norbert College at Spartan Athletic Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m as the Spartans took down the Green Knights last year by a score of 37-9. AU is now ranked #19 in the top 25 national rankings.

- AU fell to top ranked North Central College 48-21.
- Tyler Adkins threw for 289 yards and a touchdown.
