Spartans Edged By Stars In Regular Season Finale

The Aurora University men's basketball team looked to end their 2024-2025 regular season on a high note when they traveled to Dominican University for their final game before the start Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament next week. Mekhi Doby made one-of-two free throws at the line near the end of regulation to send the game to overtime, but the Stars came out with the victory over the Spartans 101-97 on Saturday afternoon.

How it happened
- After the Stars got out to the early 9-8 lead through the first two and a half minutes, Joevonn McCottry went on a personal 7-0 scoring run for AU.
- McCottry's run gave the Spartans 15-9 lead with 16:37 on the scoreboard in the first half.
- Dominican came back with an 11-3 scoring run of their own, leaving AU with a 20-18 deficit at 11:03 on the scoreboard.
- That deficit increased to seven for the Spartans with 4:19 to go in the first half, before they went on a 14-3 scoring run to end the half.
- AU's 14-3 run gave them a 41-37 lead going into the halftime break. 
- Mekhi Doby and McCottry each finished with 11 points to lead the Spartans in the first half, as each side shot 50% from the field in that first 20 minutes.
- All five AU starters found the bottom of the net within the first four minutes of the second half, before Isaiah Davis buried a three that tied the score at 55.
- With 7:23 to go in the second half, the Stars made a three of their own to tie the score at 71.
- About five minutes later, Davis nailed a couple of free throws to give the Spartans an 84-83 lead.
- Each team traded baskets through the final 2:26, as Doby got to the charity stripe with 26 seconds left.
- Doby would make one-of-two at the line for AU, tying the score at 87, eventually sending the game to overtime.
- Despite six more points from McCottry in the overtime period, the Spartans fell to the Stars 101-97.
