Spartans Hang On To Defeat Eagles

The Aurora University women's basketball team won their second-straight game on Saturday afternoon in their 2024-2025 regular season finale, knocking off the Eagles of Benedictine University by a score of 65-61. This marks the 9th road win for the Spartans who will now also finish 17-7 overall, setting up another date with the Eagles in the first round of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament next Tuesday in Thornton Gymnasium.

How it happened
- AU came out on fire, taking an 8-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.
- Eliot Dojutrek netted four points for the Spartans during that period.
- The Spartans would see that lead trimmed down to three nearing the end of the first quarter.
- AU began the second quarter on a 6-0 scoring run, as Krystyna Manzanarez made back-to-back layups to give the Eagles a 19-12 deficit.
- Riley Doggett went on a personal 7-2 run later in the second for the Spartans, who held a 26-14 lead with 5:29 to go in the first half.
- The Eagles cut the Spartan lead to 30-24 entering the half.
- Doggett finished with a grand total of seven steals in the first half, acting as a pest all night long defensively.
- Dojutrek scored five points on back-to-back AU possessions in the beginning of the third quarter, giving the Spartans a 35-29 advantage.
- Later in the third, Manzanarez scored seven-straight points of her own keeping the AU lead at 42-39.
- Jennifer Heinberg caught fire nearing end of the third quarter, as a trey from her gave the Spartans a 54-47 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
- The Eagles got the game back to one possession with 1:46 to play, trailing AU 60-57.
- A clutch three from Manzanarez and free throws from Dojutrek sealed the deal in a 65-61 Spartan win.
