Topp came to AU from Wartburg College where he served as the defensive line coach in the 2011 season. Prior to that he was an assistant coach (offensive line) for one season at Minnesota State University Moorhead and was a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Grand Valley State University.

Topp was a tight end and offensive lineman at Grand Valley State in his four years as a letterman. In his four seasons, Grand Valley State did not lose a regular season game while he made 23 starts at tight end and guard. Additionally, Grand Valley State won four conference championships and two NCAA Division II National Championships (2005 and 2006). A two-time Academic All-GLIAC performer, Topp was an All-Conference performer at guard his senior season.

He earned his bachelor of science degree in history from Grand Valley State University in 2008.
