Luke Cutkomp joined the AU football program as an assistant coach in 2005 and became the Spartans defensive coordinator prior to the 2008 season.
In his first season (2008) as the AU defensive coordinator, Cutkomp was a Finalist for the Muscle Milk/Footballscoop.com Division III Coordinator of the Year. Cutkomp's defensive corp ranked first in Division III in takeaways, interceptions and turnover margin, third in total defense, fourth in rush defense and opponent first downs allowed. The Spartans ranked first or second in eight defensive categories in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.
As the defensive line coach, Cutkomp has coached 20 All-Conference defensive linemen, including all four 2008 starting defensive linemen. 2008 Spartans Marcus Goedken (DT) and Pat Funk (DE) were named D3Football.com All-Region. Goedken was also a 2007 all-region selection while Funk was a 2009 all-region selection.
Since 2008, the Spartan defense has produced 28 All-Conference selections, eight all-region players, four All-Americans and one NACC Defensive Player of the Year. Additionally, the AU defense has finished ranked in the Top 25 in various defensive rankings 12 times.
In 2013, AU defensive end Tyler Simmons was named to the 2013 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. Simmons was selected by. Allstate Insurance and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) as one of 22 honorees.
Cutkomp serves as the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference representative on the AFCA Division III Assistant Coaches Committee.
He came to AU from Carroll College where he served as the defensive line coach for two seasons. Prior to that he was a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Wartburg College, where he served as the defensive line – linebackers – tight ends student assistant coach.
Cutkomp was a tight end on Wartburg’s 1999 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship team and is a member of the American Football Coaches Association. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Wartburg College in 2003 and his masters degree in Education from Carroll College, Waukesha, WI, in May 2007.
