The Spartans of Aurora University Spartans fell to their Northern Athletics Conference rival Eagles of Benedictine University 28-21 at Vago field on AU Homecoming.
Entering
today's contest both teams where undefeated in conference play (1-0). The high powered offense of Benedictine came to Vago field to test the stout Spartan defense.
The AU defense was tested early has the Eagles scored on the opening drive of the game. BU went seven plays ending with a 3 yard touchdown by sophomore running back John Borsellino to put the Eagles ahead 7-0.
The Spartans offense would answer back immediately on their first drive. An eight play 65 yard march down field was capped off by junior quarterback
Jimmy Bevell's four-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end
Ryan Mizgate to even the score 7-7
after the PAT.
On the next possession for BU, the Spartan defense would not allow the Eagles a yard, forcing BU to a three and out.
Bevell and the offense would take over at their own 27-yard line and drive for 73 yards resulting in a one-yard touchdown rush by Bevell to put the Spartans in front 14-7 with just over a minute to play in th opening quarter.
AU and BU traded possession that ended in punts to start the second quarter and then a BU turnover on downs gave AU the ball at the AU 26 yard line. But on the first play, Bevell completed a nine-yard pass to junior receiver
Evan Hackbarth who fumbled as he
fought for more yards. The Eagles defense recovered setting up their offense deep in AU territory.
The Eagles took over three minutes to go 34 yards on seven plays with Borsellino scoring his second touchdown of the day, this time from eight yards out.
Aurora drove deep into Benedictine territory just before the half but turned the ball over on downs with 10 seconds to play before halftime. BU took a knee with the game knotted at 14.
The Spartans received to open the second half and four plays in, Bevell threw his first of two interceptions. The AU defense forced BU to punt but they found themselves back on the field shortly after when Bevell threw his second interception.
The interception by junior defensive back Matt McWilliams set up the Eagle offense a
nd they would take advantage. The BU offense took 10 plays and almost five minutes to drive 62 yards, with the drive being capped off by a 22 yard touchdown run by senior fullback Eric Ritter. BU took a 21-14 lead.
The Spartan offense looked to answer right back with a long drive of their own. On the 10th play of an 81 yard drive, senior running back
Jeff Fellers fumbled at the BU five yard line which was recovered by Benedictine.
BU took advantage of the third AU turnover of the half, sustaining a 16 play, 95 yard drive that took over 10
minutes off the play clock. The drive concluded on Borsellino's third touchdown run, this time from 20 yards out, giving the Eagles a 28-14 lead.
The Spartans answered right back, going 67 yards on nine plays in a minute and a half to cut the lead back to seven at 28-21. Senior all-purpose back
Spenser Adams scored on a one yard touchdown plunge.
AU attempted an on-side kick but was unsuccessful in recovering the bouncing ball and with one first down, BU iced the game and captured their first victory at Aurora University since the 1988 season.
AU and BU are both now 3-2 on the season with BU improving to 2-0 in the NAC while AU is 1-1.
