The Aurora University Spartan Men's Track and Field competed on Saturday, February 9 at the Chicagoland Indoor Track and Field Championships at North Central College. AU finished 10th overall in team points. AU's men, yet again, broke multiple school records throughout the meet.
“This was a great meet for us overall,” said graduate assistant Ryan Schroeder.
Freshman
Alex Duncan finished eighth in the men's 800 meter run. Duncan's time of 1:58.51 tops AU's record books. “Kyle Kazar and I have worked so hard this year for this. He broke the record last week,” said Duncan. “It was my turn today.”
Sophomore
Loren Iwanicki finished tied for fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.91 meters.
Freshman
Nick Williams won the long jump (out of 50 competitors) with a jump of 6.89 meters and he then went on to finish eighth in the 60 meter dash. Williams' time of 7.10 breaks the indoor record for the third time this year. “I have had so much fun competing with the fellow sprinters this season,” said Williams.
Junior
Drew Schmitt finished 10th in the 5,000 meter run. Schmitt's time of 15:53.89 puts him at the top of AU's record books as well. “I have been running for Coach
Ryan Chapman for awhile now,” said Schmitt. “I am relieved to finally achieve that time.”
Junior
Kyle Kayzar finished 10th in the 1,000 meter run. Kayzar's time of 2:40.00 also put him atop AU's record books.
To finish of the meet, the men's 4X400 meter relay of
Nico Gonzalez, Duncan, Kayzar, and Williams finished seventh overall. The relay's final time of 3:28.44 puts them as the fastest 4x400 meter relay in AU track and field history. “This is awesome to set a school record,” said the veteran Kayzar.
Next action for the Spartan men's track and field team comes on Saturday, February 16 when they travel to University of Chicago for the Margaret Bradley Invitational.
