AU women'a lacrosse falls in historical home opener

Box Score The Aurora University women's lacrosse team fell to Albion College 11-8 Saturday afternoon at Vago Field in the first home women's lacrosse contest in the history of Aurora University.
As the game began, Albion struck first as Julie Wood found the back of the net with 22:46 remaining in the first half.

AU freshman Gabby Rowe answered just two minutes later with a goal of her to tie the score up at 1-1. The goal was the first home goal in women's lacrosse history.

Wood was able to pick up her second goal of the game after Spartan goalkeeper Sydney Frey was unable to pick up a ball behind the goal. Albion's Mackenzie Novak was able to find Wood in front of the empty net for the score and a 2-1 lead.

AU was not only able to tie things up once again, but they were able to take there first lead on Vago Field. Goals by sophomores Danielle Hernandez and Christy Savellano gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead with
10 minutes to play in the first half.

Albion was able to regain the lead as Wood was able to score twice more before the end of the half, giving the Britons a 4-3 lead going into the break.

Two quick goals by Albion in the first five minutes of the second half increased the deficit to three goals, 6-3.

AU then responded and came within two goals at 7-5 following goals by Hernandez and sophomore Paige Ronnenberg.

A free position shot by Albion's Ashley Glenn gave the Britons a 8-5 lead but less than one minute later AU was awarded a free position shot of their own that was converted by freshman Jordan Nielsen.

Nielsen was awarded another free position shot and buried that one as well making it 8-7.

At the 10:30 mark the Briton's Katie Coolwick went goal line to goal line to give Albion a two goal lead once again.
Albion widened the gap when a nifty pass across the face of the goal from Novak led to Glenn's fourth goal of the game and a 10-7 advantage.

AU senior Kaitlyn Crohan answered right back as a quick break off the draw led to a wide open shot in front of net. Crohan's goal cut the lead to 10-8.

Albion tacked on one more in the final second of the match to close the door on the Spartans hopes of a comeback and secure an 11-8 win.

The Spartans were led by Nielsen who finished the day with four points (two goals and two assists). Albion was led by Glenn who finished with five goals and one assist.

The loss drops AU to 0-4 overall. The Spartans will be in action once again tomorrow as they take on Adrian College. The match is scheduled to being at 1:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
