A road trip to Kenosha, Wisconsin and a match-up wth the Carthage College Redmen was all that stood between the Aurora University men;s lacrosse team and the first Midwest Lacrosse Conference Championship. AU answered with a
dominating 14-3 win over Carthage and the MLC Championship in the third year of the Spartan program.
The Spartans set the tone early that they were the team to beat on Saturday evening, scoring the games' first six goals and leading 5-0 after the first quarter. Sophomore
Max Obriecht scored the first goal 1:50 into the game and was followed by goals from
Andrew Schoessel with an assist from
Danny Loyall, Obriecht again, Loyall scored the eventual game winner with 5:54 left in the opening quarter on an assist from
Jack Barry.
Pat Diorka closed out the first quarter scoring with 3:33 remaining off an assist from
Garret Rosiek.
AU started the second quarter just as they left of the first. Barry tallied a goal with 12:22 on the clock for a 6-0 Spartan lead.
The Spartan defense and junior goalkeeper
Adam Holka held the high scoring Carthage offense in check but the home
Redmen would finally put a tally on the scoreboard with 8:38 left in the second.
But the Carthage goal would be the last one for over 30 minutes as AU continued to pour on the offense. Obriecht tallied his third goal for the hat trick with 4:55 to play in the first-half. Just under three minutes late, Rosiek scored with an assist from Loyall.
AU took an 8-1 lead into the halftime intermission and the conference crown well within sight.
In the third quarter, the Spartans continued to dominate Carthage, scoring three more times while the AU defense frustrated the home team with their constant pressure.
Scoring in the third for AU were Loyall (twice for a hat trick) and junior
Zachary Olsen. Rosiek assisted on two of the
goals with Schoessel assisting on the Loyall hat trick goal. After three quarters in the books, AU led 11-1.
In the fourth quarter, the Spartans built a 13-1 lead with goals by sophomore
Jordan Williams (Rosiek assist) and Olsen (Loyall assist).
Carthage ended the over 30 minute scoring drought with just over six minutes to play and added the third and final goal with just over four minutes to go.

Ryan Merritt scored with 2:59 to play to conclude the games scoring and giving the Spartans a 14-3 win.
With the win, AU is the 2013 Midwest Lacrosse Conference Champions and tie a school record for wins with 13. The Spartans are 13-3 overall and 10-0 in the MLC. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse team is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1 when they host the College of Mount St. Joseph in the semi-final round of the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Tournament. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
