Hockey captures first win in school history, 5-4 over Marquette

Box Score The Aurora University hockey team opened the 2013-2014 season on Saturday, September 14 in Brookfield, Wis. against Marquette University. In the program's second season and 13th contest overall, AU defeated Marquette 5-4 for the first win in school history.

AU got out to a quick start, tallying the games first goal just 20 seconds into the game. Bryce Stenstrom scored the goal on an assist from Brandon Zurick.

The Spartans provided goalie Kyle Weiner with a two goal lead after one period with Joe Jablonski scoring the first of his three goals on the night off an assist from Ryan Davlantes.

In the second period, AU continued to add to the lead with their third goal and a 3-0 lead off the stick of Jablonski who was once again assisted by Davlantes and Anthony Rohde.

Marquette scored two goals before the second period came to an end but AU would hold a 3-2 advantage going into the final period.

In the third period, Marquette tied the game before Davlantes lit the lamp himself. Davlantes was assisted by Jake Spinder and Kevin Salinas.

After Marquette tied the contest once again, the game appeared to be headed to overtime with the score 4-4 in the final minute of the third period.

But Jablonski would have none of the overtime talk, tallying his third goal of the game for the hat trick with 30 seconds to play. He was assisted by Davlantes and Salinas.

Weiner would pick up the win in net with 31 saves. Jablonski finished with three goals, Davlantes had four points with a goal and three assists and Salinas added two assists.

Next action for the Spartan hockey team comes on Friday, September 27 when they travel to Robert Morris University. AU takes on RMU White at 9:05 p.m. at the Edge in Bensenville, Ill.
