The Aurora University men's soccer team took to the road in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match up at Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon with the Spartans claiming a 3-1 victory.
AU jumped out to an early lead when
Alex Brunell scored his first goal of the season at 16:38 of the first half.
The Spartans and Falcons saw an evenly played contest for the remainder of the first half with AU taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
As the second half opened up, both teams continued to play a back and forth contest with neither team producing much offense over the first 25 minutes.
In the 71st minute (71:35) AU's
Ben Edith found himself all alone with the Falcon goalkeeper on a breakaway. Edith buried the shot and gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead with under 20 minutes to play.
Just under four minutes later the Spartans found themselves with a penalty kick and
Miguel Barajas tallied the goal and gave AU a commanding 3-0 lead.
As quick as the Spartans had pushed out to a 3-0 lead, the Falcons kept the game within reach. Only 12 seconds after Barajas scored, Falcon Bobby Russ broke up the shutout attempt by the Spartans and goalkeeper
Zach McFarland.
McFarland finished the day with three saves as AU improved to 8-3-2 overall and 3-2 in the NACC with the win. Next action for the Spartan men's soccer team comes on
Wednesday, October 15 when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
