Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Spartan women shutout Sabres on Senior Day

The Aurora University women's soccer hosted the Sabres of Marian University on Senior day on Vago Field.

The Spartans came into today's game on an 11-game unbeaten streak looking to extend the streak to 12 while celebrating the six Spartan seniors at halftime.

The opening minutes of play saw the two teams trade possession with little scoring chances to note until the 21st minute. Marian's Brittany Syms got behind the AU defense but was stuffed by Spartan goalkeeper Rachael Warnock to preserve the scoreless tie.

AU had a premier scoring opportunity in the 27th minute when Nicci Bermudes sent in a corner kick that found senior Lisa Bajkowski. But prior to Bajkowski putting the ball in the goal on a header, she was called offside.

But the quick striking Spartans responded just a minute later. Bermudes intercepted a ball and found her way past two defenders and put the ball just above the goalies outstretched arm, Spartans led 1-0 on the 24th goal of the season for Bermudes.

The rest of the first half played out uneventfully with AU going into the half with a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw the Spartans pick up the pace on offense. Over the first 19 plus minues the Spartans dominated play but could not find the back of the net.

At 64:09, senior Lorelei Ritzert was able to get behind the Sabres defense and fed fellow senior Brittany Roydhouse who found the back of the Sabre net for her sixth goal of the season and a 2-0 AU lead.

In the 71st minute, Ritzert sent the ball on a corner kick to Bermudes who made a couple of fancy moves and sped one past the Sabres goalie for her 25th goal of the season.

The Spartans would go on to defeat the Sabres by a 3-0 score, AU's 10th shutout of the season.

With the win, AU is now 12-3-1 overall and 8-0 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on Wednesday, October 22 when they travel to Benedictine University. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Lisle, Illinois.
