For the ninth consecutive year and 16 of the last 19 years, the Aurora University women's soccer team claimed a conference championship, this time the 2014 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference crown with a 4-0 shutout of the rival Benedictine University Eagles.
The Spartans got in the scoreboard at 15:01 of the game when junior
Nicci Bermudes tallied what would be her ninth game winning goal of the season, her 26th overall.
In the 40th minute AU struck again, this time with Bermudes assisting senior
Brittany Roydhouse for a 2-0 AU lead.
Then less than two minutes later, Roydhouse found the back of the Eagle net again from 30-yards out and gave AU a commanding 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The AU defense held BU without a shot in the first half and would only allow five total for the game, none of which were a worthy scoring chance.
At 58:37 AU got the games final goal with Bermudes connecting on her 27th of the season and pulling her within three goals of tying the single season AU women's goal scoring record.
Freshman goalkeeper
Caitlin DeRuiter went all 90 minutes for the shutout win and extended the Spartans unbeaten streak to 13 straight games.
With the NACC clinching win, AU is now 13-3-1 overall and 9-0 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on
Saturday, October 25 when they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
