Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

AU men's soccer downs Eagles of Edgewood 3-1

The Aurora University Men's soccer team took on the Eagles from Edgewood College on Saturday afternoon on Aurora's Vago Field.  AU was able to hold off a late push by the Eagles and convert a goal in the final minute to secure a 3-1 win.

The Spartans and Eagles traded opportunities early on in the game before the Spartans were able to break through and open the scoring.  In the 27th minute, Aurora's Ben Edith controlled the ball in Eagle territory and crossed the ball perfectly to Jacob Goehring who buried it for his fifth of the year.

AU seemed to deflate the Eagles' defense with the first goal and scored less than five minutes later as Jason O'Brien was able to find the back of the net off of a pass from Alberto Bustamante.

With a 2-0 lead, the Spartans began to slow the pace of the game and were able to coast into the half with the same score.
Edgewood was only able to notch one shot on goal in the first half to Aurora's five as AU's defense and goalkeeper Chris Donner were able to slow down any Edgewood opportunities that seemed to be developing.

The Eagles came out stronger in the second half and seemed to be creating more chances early on. In the 75th minute, the Eagles were finally on the scoreboard with a goal from Luke Miller.  This cut the Aurora lead in half with just about 15 minutes to play in the game.

Aurora and Edgewood continued to create scoring chances but both defenses were able to adjust and keep the score at 2-1 until the Spartans were able to draw a penalty in the box for a penalty kick with 20 seconds to play.  Jason O'Brien failed to convert on the PK but followed up on his rebound and tapped in for a goal to put the Spartans up 3-1; the Spartans would go on to win by the same score.

With the win, the Spartans are now 7-3-2 overall and 2-2 in the NACC.  Next action for the Spartan men's soccer team comes on Saturday, October 11 when they travel to Concordia University Wisconsin. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. in Mequon, Wisconsin.
