In a match up of tradition midwest women's soccer programs, the Aurora University Spartans traveled to Rock Island, Illinois to take on the Augustana College Vikings on Tuesday night. The Spartans and Vikings played to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes.
The first half saw the two teams play a fairly evenly play match with AU out shooting the host Vikings 7-3 over the first 40 minutes of the first half.
In the 41st minute (41:40) the Vikings tallied the games first goal when Kelly Farell beat Spartan goalkeeper
Rachael Warnock. The teams went into the halftime intermission with a 1-0 Augustana lead.
The second half played almost identically to the first half over the first 20 minutes, this time the Spartans held an 8-3 shot advantage but could not manage to beat Viking goalkeeper Mereditch Chew.
In the 67th minute, Spartan junior goal scoring extraordinaire
Nicci Bermudes connected for the 20th time in 2014, beating Meredith to tie the game 1-1.
The Bermudes goal seemed to fire up the home Vikings as they out shot AU 8-2 over the final 23 minutes but Warnock stood tall, making saves on the only two shots on goal and forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, Warnock made three saves with Bermudes coming up with the only AU shot, missing just high over the cross bar with just over one minute left in the first overtime.
The second overtime saw the Spartans and Vikings again trade scoring chances but neither could best the opponents goalkeeper and finishing in the 1-1 tie.
With the tie, AU is now 9-3-1 overall and 5-0 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on
Saturday, October 11 when they travel to Concordia University Wisconsin. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Mequon, Wisconsin.
