Tuesday evening in Thornton Gymnasium on the campus of Aurora University saw the AU women's basketball team host the Rockford University Regents with AU picking up their first win of the 2014-2015 season 66-58.
AU junior guard
Bethany Dorrington returned to the court on the night and led the Spartans with a game-high 30 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field including 7-of-11 from three-point range. She also added seven rebounds and three assists.
The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind a three-point basket from sophomore
Alex Hultine and a lay-up from freshman
Morgan Ricketts. Rockford clawed their way back into the game as the teams traded leads four different times in the first 10 minutes of action.
Tied at 16 with 9:56 on the clock, Dorrington drained her second three of the half after coming off the bench to give AU a lead they would never relinquish. AU finished the half on a 21-9 run to take a 37-25 lead into halftime.
In the first 10 minutes of the second half, AU continued to control the contest and built the games largest lead at 20 (54-34) with 9:44 to play.
After a Rockford timeout from their fiery Head Coach, the Regents embarked on a run of their own to get back into the game. Over the next four minutes Rockford ran off a 14-3 run that cut the lead to single digits at 57-48 and forcing a Spartan timeout.
The timeout by AU Head Coach
Brittany Carper seemed to work magic as AU maintained a lead that never got any closer than eight points in the final 5:40 of action.
The victorious Spartans now have a 1-7 overall record and are 1-3 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Joining Dorringont atop the leader board on the night was senior forward
Neely Marks who brought home a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds with six blocked shots, Ricketts finished with nine points and eight rebounds and Hultine had eight points and six assists.
Next action for the Spartan women's basketball team comes on
Saturday, December 13 when they host Edgewood College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Thornton Gymnasium.
