Hockey drops opening pool play contest in ACHA Nationals

The Aurora University hockey team dropped the opening game of the 2014 American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) National Tournament pool play to Davenport University on Tuesday afternoon, 7-2.

AU fell behind early in the first period when Davenport scored on Spartan goalkeeper Paul Favaro courtesy of a break away goal.

The Spartans did not lay down though as they countered with a goal later in the period off the stick off Thomas Massman.

The 1-1 tie carried AU into the first intermission.

The second period was unusually unkind to AU though as Davenport tallied five unanswered goals in the period to seperate themselves with a 6-1 lead going into the second intermission.

Each team added a goal in the third period with the Spartan goal being scored by Anthony Rohde.

AU is now 0-1 in pool play and next action for the Spartan hockey team comes on Wednesday, March 12 when they play California University Pennsylvania in Coral Springs, Fla. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (6:30 p.m. Aurora time).
