Softball sweeps Edgewood in NACC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Aurora University softball team swept a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Edgewood College on Wednesday afternoon, winning 2-1 and 5-0. The games were played at New Haven Park due to unplayable field conditions at the Spartans normal home field at the Stuart Sports Complex.

The Spartans took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Freshman Mandey Schrader led off with a single and with two outs, fellow freshman Steph Starr singled and
reached on an error and eventually came around to score.theonly run starting pitcher Natalie Zanella would need. Dierking moved to second in the inning on a single by Sarah Clauser and after Dierking and Clauser stole second and third, Dierking scored on a ground out by Starr.

Zanella limited Edgewood to two hits in the game, the Spartan offense put the game away in the fourth inning. In the fourth, AU scored four runs with timley hitting and took advantage of one Edgewood error. Moore led off with a walk and after being sacrificed to second, she scored when Dani Bestwina reached on an error. After the error, the Spartans put together three straight hits, a single by Vanessa Wegner, a double by Lauren Huebner to score Bestwina and then a two run single by Schrader. After the inning was complete, AU led 5-0.

AU held on to the lead and shutout with the 5-0 win as the Spartans managed only five hits in the game but took advantage of four Edgewood errors.

With the sweep, AU is now 17-9 overall and 11-1 in the NACC. Next action for the Spartan softball team comes on Thursday, April 17 when they travel to Concordia University Wisconsin. Game one is set for 3:00 p.m. in Mequon, Wis.
