Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Spartans stung by Hornets

The Aurora University women's soccer team was defeated in a close 1-0 game versus Kalamazoo College in the Chelsea Lloyd Memorial Classic Sunday afternoon to even up their record at 1-1.

During the first half of play, the Spartans and the Hornets produced very few offensive opportunities as most of play was done in the middle of the field.  Despite each team recording two shots during the first half, neither team recorded a shot on goal.

The second half of play proved to be different with much more action near the goalkeepers. The teams went back and forth trading scoring chances before Kalamazoo was able to open the scoring.  In the 73rd minute of play, the Hornets' pressure was too much as a floating ball was able to make it's was over the hands of Spartan goalkeeper Rachael Warnock.

With under five minutes to play the Spartans nearly tied it up as Nicci Bermudes threaded a perfect through ball to Brittany Roydhouse.  Roydhouse found herself with nobody but the goalie in front of her and put a shot on goal but Hornet keeper Lucy Mailing made a diving save to hold the 1-0 lead.

The Hornets were able to fend off the Spartan offense for the remainder and handed Aurora their first loss of the season.

Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on Friday, September 5 when they travel to Alma College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. (est) in Alma, Michigan.
