Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball wins 2014 Jim Coleman Memorial Classic

For the first time in the 14 seasons of the Aurora University hosted Jim Coleman Memorial Volleyball Classic, the AU volleyball team won the classic with a 4-0 record.

After going 2-0 on day one of the classic on Friday afternoon, the Spartans faced a test on Saturday with fellow unbeaten University of Dubuque and North Central College on the schedule.

The Spartans came out swinging in the opening match against Dubuque, beating the match-up of Spartans 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22) to be the lone unbeaten team in the field through three contests. Sophomore Peyton McKenzie continued to play well in the classic putting up 13 kills and a .344 kill percentage and in the game. Lexi O'Boyle had 26 assists and 15 digs with Katie Olsen picking up 24 digs.

With the outright championship on the line in the final match of the day on court one against North Central, the Spartans were also looking to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Cardinals one week ago at the North Park Tournament. And avenge the previous loss they did with a strong 3-1 win over North Central, 25-23, 25-18, 17-25, 25-18.

McKenzie once again was the focus of the Spartan offense, knocking down 16 kills with a .361 kill percentage with three blocks, 12 digs and two serving aces. O'Boyle had 24 assists and 17 digs, Brooke Pylant had 18 digs and three blocks, Destiny Stuersel had 15 assists, Alexis Hammond had 10 kills and Andrea Kappelman had 19 digs.

For their tremendous play throughout the tournament, three Spartans were named to the 2014 All-Tournament Team, McKenzie (MVP), O'Boyle and Pylant.

With the two wins on the day, AU improved their record to 8-4 overall on the season. Next action for the Spartan volleyball team comes on Tuesday, September 16 when they host Dominican University. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Thornton Gymnasium.
