Spartan women drop last second contest to University of Chicago

The Aurora University Women's Soccer team dropped a heart-breaking match-up with the Maroons of University of Chicago on Tuesday afternoon, falling 3-2 on a goal with two seconds left on the clock.

With the game tied 2-2 and the final seconds of the contest running down before a potential overtime, Chicago's Naomi Pacalin drilled a shot past AU goalkeeper Rachael Warnock for the game winner and breaking the hearts of the Spartans who had come back to take a 2-1 lead earlier in the half.

In the first half, Warnock kept the Spartans in the game with two incredible back to back saves early on in the game. Chicago was able to capitalize on a penalty kick midway through the first half which gave the Maroons an early 1-0 lead. On the shot, Warnock read the play but the ball snuck past her out-stretched hands.

The Spartans and Maroons battled out the rest of the half but ultimately the Spartans went into halftime trailing 1-0.

The start of the second half saw AU come out on fire, senior Brittany Roydhouse got past her defender and received a beautiful pass from junior Nicci Bermudes to tie the contest at 1-1. The goal came less than a minute into the start of the second half.

The Spartans were able to move the ball more efficiently in the second half, ultimately leading to another goal by Bermudes. She found the topcorner of the goal to bring the Spartans ahead 2-1 with just over 20 minutes to play.

AU had several more chances over the next 15 minutes of action but ciould not secure another tally.

With under five minutes to play the Maroons went on the offensive and were able to score on a shot to the corner of the goal off a header that once again went past the out stretched arms of Warnock. The game was tied 2-2 with 4:30  left to play. The goal set up the eventual heart-break as Chicago would score with two seconds left in the game and defeat the Spartans 3-2.

With the loss, AU is now 1-3 overall on the season. Next action for the Spartan women's soccer team comes on Friday, September 12 when they host Greenville College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. on Vago Field.
