On Saturday, Feburary 14, the Aurora University men's track and field team traveled to North Central College to compete in the Chicagoland Indoor Championships. The Spartans placed fifth out of the 20 teams with four Spartans setting five records on the day, two also being Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference marks.
AU freshman
Leo Okeke got the AU men started by winning the 60 meter dash with an AU and NACC record setting time of 6.93 and he then took seventh in the 200 meter dash with an AU best time of 22.72.
Another AU freshman,
Bobby Cooks took second place in the 60 meter hurdles with a NACC and AU record time of 8.16. Yet another AU freshman,
Leonard Becerra set an AU best time in the pole vault, finishing eighth with a height of 4.30 meters.
Sophomore
Matt Meyers rounded out the record setters when he finished seventh in the mile run with a time of 4:20.24. The time set a new AU mark.
Other Spartans contributing to a strong showing in the all divisions meet were sophomore
Jimmy Baeskens who finished ninth in the 5,000 meter with a time of 15:48.40. Senior
Matt Swanson finished eighth in the 1,000 meter with a time of 2:44.98.
Freshman
Nick Majka took sixth place in the long jump with a jump of 6.46 meters and Cooks finished eighth with a jumpr of 6.19 meters.
Deon Conway finished sixth in the triple jump with a jump of 13.18 meters. In the high jump,
Mark Rudelich finished third (1.97 meters), senior
Loren Iwanicki was fifth (1.97 meters), Majka was ninth (1.92 meters) and sophomore
Brian Rudelich (10
th- 1.92 meters).
Next action for the Spartan track and field team comes on
Saturday, February 21 when they travel to the Margaret Bradley Invitational at the University of Chicago. Meet time is set for 11:30 a.m. in Chicago, Illinois.
