The Aurora University men's lacrosse team hosted the visiting Britons of Albion College in a non-conference match-up Saturday morning on Vago Field. The Spartans fell to the Britons 13-6.
Â
The Britons won the opening face-off and held possession for the nearly the first three minutes of the game. The Spartans looked to gather themselves from the Albion possession, but a quick forced turnover by AU led to a coast to coast goal from Spartan senior
Max Obriecht with 12:09 left in the quarter.
Â
After Albion scored the next two goals, AU freshman
Trevor McNamara tied the game at two with 1:46 to play. Albion rounded out the first quarter scoring to take a 3-2 lead after one quarter of play.
Â
As the teams stepped back onto Vago Filed for the second quarter the Spartans quickly tied the game at 3-3 with a goal by senior
Garret Rosiek and an assist coming from Obriecht just 17 seconds into the quarter. That goal seemed to give AU the momentum, but the Britons did not buckle under the Spartan pressure. The visitors scored four goals in the final 11 minutes of the second with AU sophomore
Bailey Smith tallying the lone AU goal at 5:24 with an assist from
Jordan Williams. Just before the halftime intermission, Albion scored to take a 7-4 lead into half.
Coming out of the halftime break, Albion struck first scoring at 10:06 of the quarter. AU and McNamara responded four minutes later with a one-handed goal to cut the deficit to 8-5.
But the McNamara goal started what would be an almost 18 minute scoring drought for the Spartans. While AU couldn't add to their score, Albion was, scoring four goals to take a 12-5 in the final minutes of the game.
The run was ended with 2:37 left in the game on a goal by Rosiek, his second of the day. Albion got the games last tally with 52 seconds left for the 13-6 final score.
With the loss, AU is now 1-1 overall. Next action for the Spartan men's lacrosse comes on
Monday, March 2 when they travel to Adrian College. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. (EST) in Pontiac, Michigan at Ultimate Soccer Arena.
